The three most common types are:
- Tension Headaches: These often present as bilateral head pain with a tightening, pressing, band-like tension around the head that is mild to moderate in nature. Tension headaches can last for minutes, or days. There may be sensitivity to noise or light, and there may or may not be some tenderness to touch around the head.
- Migraine Headaches: Migraines typically present as pulsating, unilateral pain on one side of the head of moderate to severe intensity. Migraines are commonly accompanied with nausea and sensitive to light and sound and are recurrent. They can last anywhere from 4-72 hours.
- Cervicogenic Headaches: These originate from the neck, although the pain is felt in one or more areas of the head, face, or both.
Studies suggest that spinal manipulation, one of the primary treatments provided by a chiropractor, can offer effective treatment for tension, migraines, and cervicogenic headaches, and is a safe alternative to conventional medicine.
